Elaine Crighton - Jazz Singer - Alford Aberdeen

Elaine Crighton is one of Scotland's up and coming jazz vocalists. Elaine was always very musical and played piano and cello from the age of 5. Singing was always her first love and learned many of her favourite jazz standards as a child singing along with her Uncle George accompanying on piano at family gatherings.

Returning to music education as an adult Elaine began studying the classical syllabus with a local teacher but always leaned towards her family's love for jazz and swing. As a result of pursuing a more jazzy structure to her vocal work Elaine has travelled to study jazz with some of the UK's top singers and educators on workshops home and abroad including Liane Carroll, Fionna Duncan, Sara Colman, Scott Stroman, Richard Micheal, Trudy Kerr and most influentially Anita Wardell. As a keen improviser and with a passion for bebop Elaine has always been interested in using her voice for more than just the lyrics. With that in mind Elaine embarked on the Jazz Diploma run by St Andrews University. Having just completed the second year, the Advanced Diploma has given Elaine the chance and ability to learn jazz theory, arranging and to gain valuable experience in band leading, repertoire and copious amounts of improvising. Elaine was thrilled to be awarded The Linda Trahan Prize for Outstanding Performance in 2016.

Elaine Crighton "We have had the pleasure of having Elaine Crighton and her quartet perform at The Coffee House for the past couple of months. Every evening they perform customers have nothing but fantastic things to say about their music and it is evident that both she and other members of the quartet are recognised as great musicians as every performance we have new customers. One customer said described them as ‘a band full of talented musicians that created a great atmosphere and an enjoyable evening.’ We are so excited for their return! We know it's always going to be a fabulous evening full of saxy, swingy, sassy Jazz"

“It was a rather pleasing evening in many ways at Whighams last night - Elaine Crighton and her band of merry men gave us two great sets of songs, largely from the bebop era which was terrific. All of this made even more so by inclusion of the ever brilliant John Burgess and the interesting and very tasty arrangements which Elaine had clearly worked hard on as a dedicated jazz student, thus proving that returning to academia armed with well earned knowledge of your subject can be both rewarding and a recipe for success - well done Elaine!”
